The part twitter has played in the christchurch earthquake search and rescue


Social networking has played a massive part in the rescue operation at Christchurch.

A tweet from America saved two New Zealand sisters from fretting their father had perished in the quake.
Michelle Gourley was at her Kaiapoi when the quake struck and she immediately tried to reach her 70-year-old dad, John, on the phone.

Not able to get through, she jumped into the car to head to Opawa but was stuck in traffic, so called her sister Joanne in Auckland. They decided to call their brother Sean in San Francisco, who used to Twitter to put the call out to see if anyone knew of John’s whereabouts, NZPA reports.
Moments later a stranger replied: "Sean I'm near Opawa, what's address."
After being given the address, the stranger went to John’s home and found him alive and well, sitting in his car outside his badly damaged house, and tweeted the find.

Other stories of rescue have also been reported.

Google People Finder has set up a special Christchurch Earthquake page where people can either look for someone, or share information about someone they know or have found.
At last count, it was tracking 9500 records.

There have also been pages set up to help house those who have nowhere to stay.
A Facebook page Accommodation for Earthquake Stricken Cantabrians has been set up to help those looking for accommodation, and those who can offer it.

Quake Escape also offers users the chance to offer accommodation or help find it.
Christchurch City Council and the Government are both tweeting regular updates on their Twitter pages.
There have also been tales of loss.

A Facebook page Supporting Christchurch Earthquake shows comments from people who have lost loved ones.

Trish Davis says wrote “All day I’ve been struggling with the loss of my sister and friends from the earthquake”.

Spreadsheets (Excel)

  1.  import: csv (comma separated value file) known as standardised format for all computers, can be read by all computers.
  2. Absolute and relative references (Absolute means it will absolutely always refer to that cell) (relative means it change if a formula is copied and pasted dependant on where it has been pasted) (use '$' sign to make a reference absolute)
  3. Named cells, named ranges (A named cell is an automatic absolute reference) (Named ranges is naming a cell) (This makes reading formulae easier)
  4. sum, average, maximum, minimum, integer, rounding, counting, if, lookup
  5. perform searches using AND, OR, NOT, LIKE (cuts down searches like search engine "Google")
  6. perform search using wildcard (wildcard is a *) (It broadens searches)

Computer Components

Computers come in all types and sizes. There are primarily two main sizes of computers. They are:

Portable
Desktop
The portable computer comes in various sizes and are referred to as laptops, notebooks, and hand-held computers. These generally denote different sizes, the laptop being the largest, and the hand-held is the smallest size. This document will mainly talk about the desktop computer although portable computer issues are also discussed in various areas.

Computer Components:

Computers are made of the following basic components:

Case with hardware inside:

Power Supply - The power supply comes with the case, but this component is mentioned separately since there are various types of power supplies. The one you should get depends on the requirements of your system. This will be discussed in more detail later

Motherboard - This is where the core components of your computer reside which are listed below. Also the support cards for video, sound, networking and more are mounted into this board.

Microprocessor - This is the brain of your computer. It performs commands and instructions and controls the operation of the computer.
Memory - The RAM in your system is mounted on the motherboard. This is memory that must be powered on to retain its contents.
Drive controllers - The drive controllers control the interface of your system to your hard drives. The controllers let your hard drives work by controlling their operation. On most systems, they are included on the motherboard, however you may add additional controllers for faster or other types of drives.

Hard disk drive(s) - This is where your files are permanently stored on your computer. Also, normally, your operating system is installed here.

CD-ROM drive(s) - This is normally a read only drive where files are permanently stored. There are now read/write CD-ROM drives that use special software to allow users to read from and write to these drives.

Floppy drive(s) - A floppy is a small disk storage device that today typically has about 1.4 Megabytes of memory capacity.

Other possible file storage devices include DVD devices, Tape backup devices, and some others.

Monitor - This device which operates like a TV set lets the user see how the computer is responding to their commands.

Keyboard - This is where the user enters text commands into the computer.

Mouse - A point and click interface for entering commands which works well in graphical environments.

Hardware vs software

Hardware

Definition: Devices required to store and execute (or run) the software.

Function: Hardware serve as the delivery system for software solutions. The hardware of a computer is infrequently changed, in comparison with software and data, which are “soft” in the sense that they are readily created, modified, or erased on the comput To perform the specific task you need to complete.


Software

definition: Collection of instructions that enables a user to interact with the computer. Software is a program that enables a computer to perform a specific task, as opposed to the physical components of the system

Function:Software is generally not needed to for the hardware to perform its basic level tasks such as turning on and reponding to input.
